Sustainability in hospitality is evolving. Today’s leaders are realizing that true impact isn’t measured only in energy saved or waste diverted, it’s measured in how people feel, grow, and contribute to a shared purpose. This February, our theme People, Purpose & Inclusive Leadership explores the human side of sustainability and why it matters.
In North America’s hospitality sector, sustainability is no longer defined solely by carbon reductions and resource efficiency, it’s defined by people, purpose, and inclusive leadership. Frontline teams are increasingly shaping how hotels think about their purpose, their impact, and how they cultivate workplaces where everyone thrives. Inclusive cultures and well-being are strategic accelerators; employees in inclusive environments are twice as likely to be engaged at work, which drives retention and guest experience alike.
Workplace wellbeing and diversity aren’t just ethical imperatives, they’re business imperatives. Research shows that employees who feel included and engaged are significantly more productive and more likely to stay. Inclusive teams outperform others on innovation and guest satisfaction, a correlation that aligns directly with higher Eco-Rating performance.
In North America, women represent more than 50 % of the hospitality workforce, yet leadership representation remains disproportionately low, a gap that limits organizational excellence and undermines inclusive cultures.
DEI and workplace wellbeing programs also have tangible value for employer brand. A majority of hospitality job seekers, particularly among younger talent consider diversity and a supportive work environment essential when evaluating employers. This shift makes certification frameworks like Eco-Rating more than sustainability credentials. They become declarations of values. When a property has verified sustainability performance, including strong people-centric metrics, it signals that environmental stewardship goes hand-in-hand with equitable labor practices, team engagement, and community impact.
By elevating DEI, wellbeing, and inclusive leadership within sustainability strategies, hotels not only deliver better outcomes for the planet, but they also ensure that every individual feels empowered, supported, and integral to long-term success.
